Hi, I’m Stephen O’Grady, and most of what you read on this blog is my fault.
Things The Fans Should Know:
- Born in New York, raised in New Jersey - don’t start
- Shortly after birth, was given the option of being a Sox fan or being disowned
- Actually, #2 was a trick: if you thought there was a choice, you’re not really a fan
- At 5, Dad took me to Yankee Stadium, I wore my Sox batting helmet, Yankees fans poured beer on me
- At 8, Dad took me to Fenway, the kid next to me was carted out after being hit in the stomach with a foul off the bat of Jim Rice
- In 1986, I stroked out for some years
- In 1994, clinical obsession with the sport commenced when I roomed with two baseball nuts at Williams
- In 1997, I moved to NYC, and listened to the Red Sox over 33.3 dialup (once upon a time, there were these things called modems)
- In 1998, I discovered that Global News by Columbus Circle carried the Boston Sunday globe, and I began getting up early to pay double the cover price to read Peter Gammons’ Notes columns
- In 2000, Pedro struck out 17 and several New Yorkers grudgingly bought me beers
- In 2003, I actually got through a virtual waiting room and several friends and I witnessed a bona fide miracle in person: John Burkett started against Tim Hudson, but we won.
- Later that year, Aaron Boone did something that made me unplug the phone and kayak out to Beale Island for two days, causing people to think I was dead
- In 2004, I was publicly chastised by Red Sox owner John Henry on the Sons of Sam Horn forum for strenuously arguing against a trade for Alex Rodriguez
- Later that year, I went insane, but so did everybody else
- In 2005, having brought us our first title in 80 years, I was free to move to Denver
- In 2006, I suffered massive withdrawal and moved back to Maine for part of the summer
- In 2007, I was back in Maine by mid-May and didn’t move back to Denver until another title was secure, at which point everyone was mad at me
- In 2008, I’ll divide my time between Denver and Maine near equally
What else could you possibly want to know?
